FOR OWNERS
BUILT A JOB
IN CHAPIN?
Most business owners do not actually own a business. They own a job.
If that landed, the rest of this page is for you.
The thirty-day test
Run the test properly
- Pick a thirty-day window and assume no warning was given. No handover, no phone.
- Go through the business function by function and write down what comes to a halt. A halt, not a slowdown — difficulty is not the measure.
- Beside each entry, name the person who could have handled it and did not.
- Mark every line that stops purely because you are the only one permitted to decide.
What you are holding is a measurement. The length of that list is the size of the job you own. The inverse of it is the size of the asset you own. Most owners find it longer than expected, and find that the bulk of it is permission rather than skill.
What this looks like around here
Small, owner-run and often trade-based: dock builders, boat mechanics, custom builders, landscapers, pressure washers. Downtown holds a short row of independent shops and restaurants and very little national brand.
Seasonality is brutal. Revenue concentrates into the warm months while overhead runs twelve, and staff hired in spring leave before the shoulder season, so every year restarts the same hiring cycle.
The Labor Day festival closes the main street and is the biggest business day of the year for downtown merchants. Churches, the lake association crowd and the schools do the rest of the organizing. That cuts both ways for an owner. Reputation compounds faster in a market this size, and so does the expectation that you personally will be the one who answers.
If this was useful, Ben's published resources goes deeper.
Two different purchases
Consulting changes how the business works. It puts process, numbers, seats and systems in place. You buy it when the structure itself is broken — when work falls through a gap because no role owns it.
Coaching changes how the owner operates. Decisions, standards, what goes on the calendar, what gets tolerated. You buy it when you already know what the business needs and you are not doing it.
Getting that choice wrong is the usual waste in this category. A coach cannot repair an organisation where nobody knows who owns the next step. A new system cannot stop an owner who keeps pulling the work back.
The disqualifiers
- You want agreement. A decision is already made and what you are buying is validation for it.
- Your calendar is not moving. Nothing changes if the week looks identical in ninety days.
- You want tactics. Tactics are cheap and widely available. Accountability is the product here.
- You have no customers yet. Pre-revenue, the answer is sales, not structure.
- You are in genuine financial distress. That needs an attorney and a CPA first, and it needs them before it needs anything else.
Being disqualified here is not a rejection. It is a shorter route to the thing that will actually help.
What nobody can promise you
No outcome. Not a revenue figure, not a timeline, not a transformation. Anyone in Chapin or anywhere else who attaches a number to a coaching relationship is selling something they cannot deliver.
What is available is narrower: someone who has run the business you are trying to run, who will tell you the truth about what they see, and who will check whether you did what you said. That is most of what accountability actually is.
Subdivisions keep filling in around the lake and the interchange, and commercial development chases them. The town is getting bigger faster than its infrastructure was designed for. Growth makes an owner-dependent business worse, not better, so a market that is expanding is exactly the wrong place to postpone this.
Frequently asked
Questions people actually ask
What is the difference between coaching and consulting?
Consulting installs systems in the business. Coaching changes how the operator makes decisions and spends time. Buying the wrong one is the usual waste.
Do I need to be in Chapin?
No. The Midlands is home ground, but the work is not geographic. The interstate runs both directions from a single exit, and residents commute toward Columbia or up the corridor toward the Upstate. No transit exists, and none is coming.
Is there a free way to start?
Yes — a free learning community and free written material. Use those first. If the free layer is not useful to you, a paid one will not rescue it.
Is this faith-based?
Ben's faith is part of his story and it shapes why he builds the way he does. Nobody is required to share it, and the material does not depend on it.
What actually happens in a coaching relationship?
A regular rhythm, honest assessment of what you are actually doing versus what you said you would do, and pressure applied to the one or two decisions that matter most this quarter. It is not a course and it is not therapy.
Make your next move
A year from now, what will you be glad you started today?
You don't need another promise that everything will be easy. You need something useful to learn — and a next step you're willing to take.
